The Hong Kong Institute of Architects (HKIA) Annual Awards 2019/20 Prize Presentation Ceremony was held on 23 November 2020. Revery Architecture (Revery), formerly Bing Thom Architects, and Ronald Lu & Partners (RLP) were awarded with the HKIA Merit Award of Hong Kong – Community Building for the design of Xiqu Centre, of which MVA is the Lead Traffic & Transport Consultant for the team.

Innovative Traffic Engineering Solutions to Make the Chinese Theatre at the Top

MVA was involved in providing transport planning and traffic engineering solutions to the design of Xiqu Centre, from conception to construction, between 2012 and 2016. Led by Revery and RLP. MVA subsequently assisted Hip Hing Engineering Co., Ltd, the main contractor, in implementing appropriate traffic management measures to facilitate the construction of the project.

The Xiqu Centre, which opened on 20 January 2019, is Hong Kong’s prestigious 8-storey performing art centre dedicated to showing traditional Chinese opera. It was the first of 17 core arts and cultural venues opened within the WKCD. Situated on the corner of Canton Road and Austin Road West, the Xiqu Centre acts as a gateway of access to the Cultural District. The architecture incorporates a generous amount of public leisure space, in addition to 2,000 square metres of training and education facilities, 2 superbly designed auditoria for 1,100 and 400 seats respectively and a traditional Tea House for performances with audiences of up to 280.
